Dogs and Babies

Well I started back to work this week grooming which has been a challenge with the new baby. Thanks to Grandma for all the babysitting! Everyone always asks me what the dogs think about the new baby in the house, and their reactions vary. Of course we are very careful with any interaction between the two and never without any supervision. Most of the dogs seem to be indifferent (just another kid!), Bugs the border collie absolutely loves her and licks her all over every chance she gets and Noel is a little scared of her - she doesn't know what she is! I'm hoping with time they all grow to be comfortable with her. Kids and dogs can be a wonderful thing if introductions and time spent together is carefully monitored and both have a good experience.

  1. Congrats on the baby!!
I am wondering if anyone else gives thier dog an egg on their food? We raise chickens asnd my dog Roo is sometimes fussy but if I mix one egg in with his food he chows down- if I do that everyday on his am feeding (so, 7 eggs per week - 80 pound dog) am I giving him too many eggs?
Also, wondering now that he is 2 does anyone feed their dog just one time per day? Same amount as food but just once?
    Love this blog!
    Best-

  2. I never put raw egg on my dogs food --I am sure there are others that are more knowledgeable about it...7 seems like too many to me to me and I am interested to hear everyones comments. I think there are other things you could also try to use to keep you dog interested in his food. I do always use a supplement (I use NuPro -- I get it from Us Bones) that my dogs just love. It is a powder but you can also add a little water and make a gravy. I saw a huge improvement in my dogs coats using this. I also have recently started giving them a little pumpkin which they really enjoy on their food (Ranger is a poop eater-nasty-and this was a suggeston I was given to try and it actually seems to be working by making it less desirable to him -- any other suggestions on poop eating?!!) and sometimes I will mix in some plain vanilla yogurt. I always twice a day. I use this time as their training time - to work for their food- so I get in a couple short sessions everyday plus I feel it is better for them --I just know I sure wouldn't only want to eat just once a day -- lol!!!! 3. Raw eggs is one of the oldest wives’ tales circulating in dog feeding info. The white of an egg is almost indigestible when raw. More important, raw egg whites combine with an essential vitamin, Biotin, and make it unavailable to the dog.

I've read that scientists who want to artificially produce a Biotin deficiency in a dog feed it raw egg whites. One of the signs of Biotin deficiency is an unhealthy condition of the skin and hair, NOT a shiny coat.

Whole eggs can be one of the most valuable sources of protein a dog can get, but only if cooked, and not in excess. In my reading I would think that 7 is in excess.

As for raw eggs, the only way they can make a dogs coat shiny is if they are smeared all over the dogs coat. In that case, the dogs coat will be shiny . . . shiny and yucky!

It's my understanding that a dog's portion of daily food should be spread into two meals. The biggest reason for this is the reduction in the chance that the dog will have torsion or bloat.

Just some more info to consider.............

  4. Sounds like I will stop the eggs!
Can I get the Nupro locally in Decorah area?
Thanks for the feedback on the feeding too.

  5. I've heard that feeding your dog pineapple as a treat will change the taste of their feces making it far less likely that they will eat it. Some people say that it takes a week or two and the habit breaks. They refresh their dogs memory from time to time using the pineapple treat.

    It's worth a try........

  6. A nice supplement to help you dog "want" their food is yogurt or cottage cheese. Both of these things help promote the health bacteria that normally lives in a dog's stomach. Generally you should look for plain, lowfat yogurt and low fat content in cottage cheese. These two things also help a dog that is recovering from loose stools.

I also heard molasses.... but not sure about that.
    Thanks for the help.

  8. The website is www.usbones.com and I think they are out of Chicago. The cool thing about them is you can also select one organization from the list they have and 25% of your order total goes to that organization. The prices are very good-like right now they are they have Wellness Treats 50% off. I was directed to this company and nupro by a breeder friend of mine who had much success with it.
